Starting Out
Sam Forster
I walk out from my den. It is early morning and the stars would be out if not for the clouds. It's going to be a dreary day. I leave my lead mare, Honey, sleep, as I stretch out my neck and toss my mane to get out the cinks on my high ledge, where I adress the herd.
I feel a drop on my back and shiver. If it gets any colder it'll be snow in no time. I look overhead, and scenting for any sign of the bachelor band that had been hanging around. Today was the perfect day for a fight, so I consider taking the herd to the springs for a good time in the water before it freezes for the winter. But really that's up to Honey.
I trot down to our river and take a cool long drink. I glance over to the adult cove, muzzle dripping, to see a pair of eyes staring directly at me. I know who it is.
"Hello Star," I nicker

Angel's Glory:
I wake up from a long sleep, it was cold in the cave, and winter now felt like it was here.
I was one of the new mares in the herd. Everyone welcomed me in, and it was now home to me.
Slowly, I stood up, many of the mares were still asleep. Not wanting to wake them, I went outside. Phantom was already out, and so was Star.
"Good morning." I said happily.

Re: Starting Out
I step back. Angel's Glory is one of the most beautiful horses in the valley. She's been a special triumph, stealing her from that arrogant Azure, a piebald pinto stallion who kept his herd near Arroyo constantly. She'd caught my eye, and I knew she'd be perfect for the herd.
I step forward towards her. "Good Morning Glory, always rise this early?"
The herd has several, regular early risers. I am one, and my son, New Moon, used to be until he left. I always visit Star, and we occasionally played foal games together when the other regulars weren't up for waking just yet, and she seems to suddenly dissapeer.
But perhaps it was just my eyes. I elegantly jump the river and trotted towards Angel, snorting after I reached her, frost billowing around us. "How are you adjusting to the valley? Is there anything we can do to help?" I'm happy to be talking to the young mare, but a part of me longs for Star to come back out.

Re: Starting Out
Sterling white and velvet black patches stood out dramatically against the early morning's grey sky.
Powerful hooves churned up Alkali dust as the black and white pinto horse trotted on.
Dainty ears pricked back and forth as she diligently picked her way down the rocky hillside that came into view.
Without a sound, Star Shower leaped down; her hooves touching the soft grass as she gracefully cantered through the tall pines toward the river bank that separated the Phantom's territory from the bachelor's and other herds' lands.
Nostrils vented out clouds of breath as the young mare stopped.
Slightly dished head lowered, Star drank the sweet water, waiting, because any minute the Phantom would come down to the river, for he was an early riser.
And just on cue, a chalk white figure walked down to the opposite bank.
The Phantom was truly a stallion to behold.
Sculpted with the beauty and strength of the land, he was what any Mustang should be.
And he was her friend.
Peering through a veiling of black curtain, Star's throat vibrated with a silent nicker before the Phantom noticed her.
"Hello Star." He nickered back calmly.
Star raised her head and was about to answer, but suddenly another horse joined them.
With lightning fast quickness, Star quickly hid herself in the shadow's of the tall trees before walking deeper into the forest.
She would come back later on, for she knew the Phantom had herd matters to attend too.

Re: Starting Out
I take this oppurtunity to glance over the valley. I'm searching for any sign of the beautiful pinto I loved. I had fought the question every morning - did I feel such love for her simply because she was a mare I couldn't add to my herd, or did I have deeper, truer feelings for her.
Star would never consent to join the herd unless something changed. She is a free spirit, strong and tough, but proud and wild. She is a strange oddity in the wild horse world, a loner. I would do anything to make her one of my mares, but I'm out of ideas. I've courted her in every way possible, and while she seems to enjoy our visits, she'll never stick around for sure. There have been a few mares like her before, but Ive alway been able to pursuade them. Could this be why I wanted her so, because I couldn't have her?
Or was there something there on a different level, something new, that I'd rarely felt before. I shake my head. This is stupid. I have things to do.
"Angel, I'm so sorry, it's just that I've realized I'd planned to go on a cougar patrol this morning and I really can't put it off any longer. I promise we'll chat soon, and if you have any questions or need anything, please talk to the mares,"
I dip my head to her, and spin on my hind hooves, dashing out of the valley. I have to catch Star before she gets too far. I head for the wooded area.

Angel's Glory:
Phantom said he had to look for cougars.
"Ok then be careful." I said, as he ran off.
But I figure that wasn't the reason he ran off. I saw a pinto mare, which I figure was Star, ran off. I heard from some of the mares, that they thought he liked her.
I watched as he ran off, I stayed by the river. But there was nothing, complete silence other than the noise of the river. I began walking back to the others, although none was awake.

Re: Starting Out
Head high and variegated mane billowing out like a banner behind me, I picked up a canter.
The bitter cold wind blew without forgiveness across my face, but I did not care.
This is what I lived for.
Freedom was my greatest love.
I kicked up my heels with playfulness, and waved my tail out like a flag as I felt the wind began to take me faster and faster as I ran on.
Dodging trees and jumping logs with cat like agility, I distanced myself from all others.
It was just me and my faint shadow; and I was set on outrunning it.
A smile creased my face as I lowered my head and charged on.
My legs carried me faster and faster until I knew that I should slow down.
I paced myself as I slowed; taking in deep breaths as I stopped.
Surveying my surroundings, I could not help but frown.
I certainly had ran far!
Suddenly, I heard something.
Spinning around, I pinned my ears and backed up; making sure that I was ready just in case it was some type of danger.
But the sound was familiar. Like galloping hooves.
They were light, though. Not thundering like some horses.
Concealing myself behind a large crevice in the mountains, I watched as the horse trotted out of the forest and into the clearing.
My heart slowed down to it's normal pace, but I stood hidden by the boulder, not wanting to disturb the Phantom.
What was he doing here, though?

Re: Starting Out
Though I started at a gallop, I slowed to a steady, graceful canter. Contrary to the normal ways of nature, it was getting colder as the day wore on. With Star nowhere in sight, I resigned myself to letting her come to me.
I focus my attention on the cougar. A few partols had scented a family around our area, and the best we horses could do was push them off toward another territory. They were a threat to the foals, when everyone would be hungry this winter.
I trot up onto a rocky ledge, overlooking the canyons, searching for any sign of a big cat, when I hear a rustle right behind me. I spin around, percariously, and if forced I could easily fall off and into the canyons, but it's better to be facing the attacker than letting it jump on my back. I prepare to rear up towards the cougar when I stop in mid paw, and my hooves slam to the ground.
It isn't a cougar. It's...

Dark Sunshine:
My drumming hooves beat out my heartbeat. My heart pounded with a desire to get home. My home was soon to be mine again in time. Time was something to be feared. Fear was something a mustang didn't have. I snorted out fire through my nose, tossing my head in the early morning wind.
I has escaped once more. And this time, nothing would make me go back. Tempest was old enough to take care of herself. Nothing held me back there. My heart only belonged to the perfect paradise that was the Phantom's hidden valley.
I hit the tunnel. For moments, black was all that made it's way into my eyes. The shallow echo of my hooves against stone hung eerily in the air like a moonless night. I streched my legs out further.
Brightness. Cantering into the valley, that is my first thought. Sweet grass, clear water, blue sky...home. I uttered a neigh of joy as I ran out into the bleak light. It didn't matter. Home, a joyous word it is. An even better word was freedom. I now had both.

I slid to a halt and stamped the ground with an impatient rhythym. I shook my mane hard, enjoying the feeling of it slapping against my neck. A mare came out to meet me. I nodded my head slowly so that it was almost like a bow.
"I am Dark Sunshine," I said, twitching part of my hindquarters where a fly had landed. My dark eyes looked over the lands I had dreamed of returning to.

I knew the name, the other horses had talked about her.

Then I noticed a mark on her neck, the mark that showed that she was once in human hands.

Honey:
Suddenly my whole body is wrapped in a blanket of brisk wind.
I snort as my eyelids flutter open, taking in the morning appearance of the den.
I notice that Phantom is up and gone, as he usually is in the mornings, most likely around checking up on the herd.
Sighing, I quickly rise to my feet and shake off my gleaming palomino coat.
I slowly walk out of the den, my hooves softly touching the ground as I come into view of the valley.
I smile slightly to myself as I look over the peaceful and beautiful scene, hardly believing that I am lead mare to it all.
I help run all of it.
I help to keep it all in order and to keep it safe.
I only see two horses out and awake, one being Angel’s Glory, a beautiful pure white Arabian- like horse.
But next to her is a horse I surely do not recognize, and I quickly trot over, ready for anything just as any lead mare would.
But when I approach her, I realize it is Dark Sunshine, a mare who was under human care until she broke free once, coming with us. She galloped with us for miles, and I grew quite fond of her, along with Phantom.
But she was recaptured and brought back to her human home. To see her back is a big shock, but I gleam with joy at the site of her.
“Sunny!”
I squeal like a little foal as I gallop up to the two mares.
I squeeze her neck with my own and paw at the ground anxiously, trying to settle myself.
